Cardiovascular disease (which includes heart disease and stroke) is the number one killer in Australia. One out of every three Australians dies from this disease. The Heart Research Centre aims to help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke to prevent unnecessary deaths and disability. We have a strong focus on psychological, behavioural and social factors that influence the development of cardiovascular disease and affect outcomes from acute illness. The Centre is the leading provider in Australia of training programs for nurses and other practitioners in our field. The knowledge gained through our research is passed on to health professionals to improve the delivery of health services to the community to help the fight against these life threatening diseases.
